Find out if you're at risk" width="266" />
With a skin condition like Rosacea, it's normal to also worry whether we're more vulnerable to things like skin cancer.

I have been living with Rosacea for the last 13 years. I also have fair skin and have gotten more sunburns throughout my life than I can count, including one that blistered when I was 7 years old.

I just watched a video from the American Academy of Dermatology that said 1 in 5 Americans will have skin cancer in their lifetime. Those statistics feel a little daunting. And beyond that, what are my own?

What it's like having Rosacea

I've shared openly on the Fairface Podcast, what's it's like living with sensitive skin and Rosacea, and what has helped me along the way.

Although I am able to manage my Rosacea today very well, it was a different story 12 years ago when I was first diagnosed. Rosacea has left its mark on my skin and my soul.

My skin is far from perfect and I can thank medium coverage make-up for hiding most of my flaws. I have tiny blood vessels on my cheeks, a perpetual rosy complexion, and a self-conscious dislike for leaving the house without make-up on. I have bumps and spots that show my age, and every year I wonder, "will this be the year I have them lasered? Will they just come back, and how many more will pop up over time?"

I take my skin care routine seriously (probably more than most). It turns out, with sensitive skin conditions like Rosacea, Eczema, Psoriasis and even acne, the order in which you wash does make a difference to your skin.

Sensitive skin conditions can be easily irritated by skin care products used while showering, from the type of body wash you use, to your facial cleansers and even shampoos and conditioners.

For this reason, the order in which you wash your face, body and hair matters, so you don't leave behind anything on your skin that can be potentially irritating.

If you are using products for your body, face and hair that are ALL made for sensitive skin, you'll have less worry about possible residue irritation.

If your hair products are not made specifically for sensitive skin, your body or face may not tolerate any residual product left behind and result in itching, redness or even a rash.

Showering Routine for Sensitive Skin

1st Wash your hair

Just because you use your shampoo and conditioner on your hair, doesn't mean you want to use it on your face or body. Facial skin can be particularly sensitive to chemicals used in hair care products. By washing and conditioning your hair first, you'll be able to rinse off any shampoo or conditioner left behind on your face or body. However, just because it's rinsed off, doesn't mean it's totally gone.

2nd Wash your body

After washing your hair, wash your body. This will allow any remaining shampoo or conditioner that may have been left behind on your skin, to be washed away by your body wash, and then rinsed off.

By washing your body 2nd, and before washing your face, it will also give you extra time in the water to ensure all your body wash is rinsed off. Although body wash may be gentle to your skin in the shower, if it's not rinsed off completely, the residue may have the potential to irritate your skin.

3rd Wash your face

Because your face is generally the most sensitive skin, over body and scalp, it's important to wash it last, so the last thing you have on your skin is your sensitive skin face wash. We love Vanicream Gentle Facial Cleanser and Fairface Delicate Flannel Facecloths for Rosacea, Eczema and other sensitive skin conditions.

Be sure to completely rinse off your facial cleanser before stepping out of the shower, and seal the moisture into your clean skin with a soothing face cream while your skin is still moist. We love CeraVe moisturizing cream.

This sensitive skin showering routine has helped me a lot. Having Rosacea and sensitive skin, myself, I am always looking for ways to prevent irritation to my skin. I have to admit, there have been a few times that I have hurried through showering and haven't completely followed these steps and have had itchy spots on my face and body. Yay or nay?

Here's what I found:

Facial Steaming for NORMAL SKIN TYPES-

According to Specialists in Dermatology, certain skin types can benefit from facial steaming once or twice a week, as the steam:

• Helps release pore build up and prepare skin for a deeper cleanse

• Nourishes skin with increased blood flow

• Hydrates skin

• Promotes relaxation, and

• Helps to open sinuses

Facial Steaming for SENSITIVE SKIN TYPES-

Unfortunately, facial steaming, for those of us with sensitive skin and skin prone to redness (like Rosacea, and Eczema), can actually make our skin worse and aggravate inflammatory skin conditions. The heat can also cause facial flushing, which for me, with Rosacea, is the opposite of what I want.

Facial steamers are right up there with hot tubs, saunas, hot showers and sitting too close to the fireplace. Create a new gentle Rosacea-safe skin care routine

This was the BIGGEST thing I needed help with after walking out of my appointment. How was I supposed to wash my face now that I had Rosacea? What face wash was I supposed to use? What about a Rosacea-safe moisturizer? Help!

Thanks to the recommendation of a dermatologist and my own trial and error over the years, I have found the holy grail of Rosacea skin care, or as I also like to call it:

The Rosacea Skin Care Dream Team

ROSACEA SAFE CLEANSER

My favorite: Vanicream gentle cleanser. It is so gentle and creamy on my skin, without any irritation at all and cleans really well without stripping my skin's natural oils. I can often find it at Target or Walgreens.

ROSACEA SAFE FACE CLOTHS

My favorite: Fairface Soft Flannel Face cloths. These are the only face cloths I will use on my Rosacea prone skin. I need more than just my fingertips to clean my skin, and these are the next best thing! They are so soft and gentle, and don't cause any irritation to my sensitive skin. Find them at FairfaceWashcloths.com and FairfaceWashcloths.etsy.com.

ROSACEA SAFE MOISTURIZERS

My favorite: CeraVe moisturizing cream OR Vanicream lite lotion I have used both moisturizers safely on my Rosacea prone skin. I tend to use CeraVe because I love its thicker, creamier coverage, but Vanicream is a very nice lighter-weight option if you don't want something very thick.

I can safely say I use all of these sensitive skin products every day and have had no irritation from them whatsoever. It is so important to wash your face gently morning and night and always moisturize. Also be sure to use any topical medications as prescribed by your dermatologist and for daytime, sunscreen is a must (as we discuss in #3)!

2. Sleep on the right pillow case and change it often to help decrease Rosacea flares

This is such an easy way to keep your skin cleaner (and clearer)! After all your effort to keep your skin clear and calm, you don't want to "undue it" by sleeping on a dirty pillow case. Plus, sleeping on a clean, cooling pillow case can be so good for Rosacea by keeping your skin cooler at night with less flushing.

Best pillow cases for rosacea, eczema and sensitive skin Photo ©Fairface™

ROSACEA SAFE PILLOW CASE

My favorite: Silk-Cotton Pillowcases from Fairface. These pillow cases not only feel soft and silky against my skin, it also reduces heat on my face through the night which means less flushing (so important for rosacea!). Plus, the glide of the fabric reduces friction to my skin and hair throughout the night, decreasing new fine lines and hair breakage. I'll take 2 please!

3. Apply sunscreen daily to protect Rosacea prone skin

I haven't always had the best relationship with sunscreen, but once I did, there was no looking back. There is no better way to protect your skin from aging and damage than wearing sunscreen AND it is vital for keeping your Rosacea prone skin protected and healthy.

According to the National Rosacea Society, exposure to the sun is named as one of the top triggers for rosacea flares and can also cause severe redness and visible blood vessels on the skin. Protect, protect, protect!

ROSACEA SAFE SUNSCREENS - My favorite: I have been using Eucerin Daily SPF 30 on my face, neck, chest and arms for years and my skin tolerates it well.

It is often recommended that those with Rosacea choose a UVA/UVB protecting, non-chemical sunscreen (those that reflect sunlight, rather than absorbing UV rays) containing zinc or titanium dioxide, to lessen the possibility of irritation.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral Face Sunscreen SPF 50 comes highly recommended but I haven't tried it myself.

4. Choose make-up that is safe for Rosacea and sensitive skin

Once you calm, protect and manage your skin (steps 1-3) you can celebrate it! I think of make-up as the "cherry on top" of healthy skin.

The key to wearing make-up if you have Rosacea, is choosing make-up that won't irritate your skin. Honestly, finding the right make-up can feel like starting at step 1 again and be very overwhelming. So many choices, and the last thing you want to do is spend a bunch of money on products that might not be right for your skin, or even worse, irritate it!

Choose brands made for sensitive skin and/or Rosacea for the best chance of finding products that won't irritation your skin.

ROSACEA SAFE FOUNDATION MAKE-UP

My favorite: I have been using Mary Kay Medium Coverage Foundation for years and my skin has tolerated it well, HOWEVER, that's all about to change. This particular foundation has been discontinued and I will be looking for a new foundation. Ugh.

My next "Rosacea friendly" foundation to try is from It Cosmetics, because it was initially created by someone with Rosacea herself (Jamie Kern Lima). Fingers crossed. Lately, I don't know if it's just the cooler weather or what, but my skin has been feeling dry, like I'm just not getting "enough" from my moisturizer.

What's more, a few weeks ago, I started seeing tiny specs of blood on my cheek as I was blotting on my foundation with a sponge. Like I had a microscopic cut on my cheek. What I have since learned, is that such problems are a tell-tale sign my Rosacea prone skin was lacking hydration, and my skin barrier was in trouble.

Why you need a Rosacea moisturizer that protects your skin barrier

"A healthy skin care routine is really about taking care of your skin barrier (the outer layer of your skin)." - Tom Allison, a founder of CeraVe

Rosacea prone skin is much more susceptible to sensitivity and irritation, so keeping that protective outer layer, or barrier, in tact and healthy is crucial.

Dr. Marisa Garshick, MD FAAD, said often times with her Rosacea patients, she finds the first step of treatment is getting them on a moisturizer, cleanser and sun protection and off offending products that have been causing more harm than good. Even with her over 4,000 followers, she was kind enough to personally respond to my message.

She said the Vanicream moisturizer I had been using (Vanicream Lite Lotion) should be good for Rosacea as the ingredients are both hydrating and support the skin barrier. For those with Rosacea, she also recommended La Roche Posay Double Repair Toleraine or CeraVe, and she concluded that the most important thing for Rosacea, especially this time of year, is feeling hydrated.

Her last sentence was key for me.

My rosacea prone skin, was in fact, NOT feeling hydrated enough with the Vanicream Lite Lotion I had been using, so I was ready to turn up my moisturizing game, and give my skin barrier the extra TLC it needed. To my disappointment, they were all out the CeraVe PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion I wanted to try, but they did have a tub of CeraVe's Moisturizing Cream, so I snatched it up.

After washing my face that night, I unscrewed the plastic lid and dipped my clean fingers down in the creamy mixture. As I gently glazed the CeraVe moisturizer across my face, it felt just as I hoped it would. If my skin could talk, it would have let out a big sigh. It felt very dewy and moisturizing, but not the least bit greasy, and before I screwed the top back on, I even slathered it on my arms and hands.

In the morning, my face and hands felt much more hydrated. My skin didn't feel as tight or dry at all and since then, 2 weeks later, my skin feels much more hydrated. Those little microscopic cracks on my face are a thing of the past.

So if you're like me, and your Rosacea-prone skin is feeling a little dry and not getting what you need from your current moisturizer, follow the advice of Dr. Garshick and remember, the most important thing for rosacea is feeling hydrated.

Must-have skin care products for Rosacea:

Protect your skin barrier with gentle skin care products (that even babies could use!)

Soft washcloths - ditch those traditional scratchy old washcloths. Fairface Delicates, double-sided soft, flannel face cloths are dreamy and gentle to the skin, without any irritating textures.

Gentle face wash - toss anything that has fragrance or irritating ingredients. I bought microfiber cloths thinking their softness was the answer and I immediately regretted it. They burned my skin so bad - I looked like a tightly stretched shiny plastic tomato (it's funny now but at the time I freaked out).

A dermatologist suggested a soft flannel cloth and when I typed it into Etsy these came up. Shannon was so kind and helped me decide on these and it's like I'm washing my face with my fingertips.

I'm attaching a pic of my face (for everyone's benefit haha I did not plan on posting these) after a microfiber cloth (it's not greasy my skin was squeaky-shiny/polished like a shoe & badly stripped/burned), & a pic of the first day using a Fairface. A week after using them I had an even (not red) skin tone that honestly I've never had. WORTH it." - Haley (reposted with permission)

The best soft face cloths for Rosacea

Have you been there yourself? You tried something new on your face and it turned out to be a very bad idea? Maybe your face got really red, broke out, or felt like it was melting off? Sensitive skin can be very finicky like that, especially if you have Rosacea.

We wanted to share Haley's honest Fairface Washcloths review with you, in case you are looking for the right soft face cloths for your Rosacea-prone skin. Like Haley, maybe you have tried other washcloths on your sensitive skin, hoping they would be gentle enough, but ended up causing irritation and redness.

Dermatologists recommend using soft, cotton flannel cloths, like Fairface Delicates, to wash your face gently, without using anything harsh that can cause your skin to get red and irritated, like the microfiber cloths did to Haley's skin.

Rosacea-prone skin also means skin prone to irritation, inflammation and redness, so gentle products are a must for keeping your skin calm and even. And that's where Fairface Washcloths come in.

What washcloths should I use on Rosacea prone skin?

What do you currently use to wash your face, if you have Rosacea or sensitive skin? Have you tried Fairface Washcloths?

Fairface Washcloths help reduce redness and irritation when you wash your face because the soft flannel glides across your face and doesn't drag or pull. If you're using a cloth, or heaven forbid a tool on your face (eek!), that causes redness and irritation, it is most likely because the material it is made out of is too harsh and abrasive to your skin. You don't want to work hard all week at following your skin care routine, only to put bacteria back on your face for 8 hours a night!

Keeping your skin clear and free from breakouts and Rosacea flares is something we all strive for.

Since prevention is key to keeping your skin clear, washing your face every night and morning with gentle products, staying away from Rosacea triggers, and faithfully sticking to your skin care routine is of the utmost importance.

So what happens, after all your diligence, when you wake up in the morning to a Rosacea flare or breakout that seemingly came out of nowhere? It can be devastating.

If you're like me, you instantly begin mentally scrolling through the previous day's activities and food consumption. It can be a little tortuous trying to pinpoint what could have caused your flare or break-out.

One thing you shouldn't ever have to wonder about, though, is whether your break-out was caused by a dirty pillow case. NOPE! NO WAY, NO HOW!

One of the easiest ways to prevent break-outs, *in tandem with a Rosacea friendly skin care routine*, is to sleep on a clean pillow case. A clean pillow case can help prevent the dirt & bacteria that collects on your pillow case, from transferring onto your skin, which can lead to break-outs and Rosacea flares while you sleep.

How often should you change your pillow case?

Dermatologists recommend changing out your pillowcase anywhere from every few days to every day, even if you wash your face every night.

I am a clean pillow case fanatic, and use a clean pillow case every other night...but sleep on a clean pillow case every night. Huh? No, it's not a riddle (I've never been one to love riddles), it's a method.

The Clear Skin Pillow Case Method

Night 1: Put on a clean pillow case and sleep on one side

Night 2: Flip that same pillow case over and sleep on the clean side

Night 3: Put on a clean pillow case and start the rotation over again

Is it a little obsessive?

Maybe.

But does it work?

Yes.

So is it worth it?

Yes!

How many pillow cases do you need?

My philosophy? Just be sure to choose cotton that is soft against your skin so it doesn't cause unwanted friction against your face.

Personally, I love both silk-cotton and soft cotton pillow cases. Both feel good against my skin and don't make my face feel hot at night. From what research indicates, both a silk pillow case and breathable, soft 100% cotton are excellent choices for Rosacea and sensitive skin types.

Avoid anything that makes your face feel hotter during the night (like satin or microfiber), which can contribute to Rosacea flares.

How should I wash my pillow case?

How you wash your pillow case can be just as important as your efforts to use a clean one.

For sensitive skin and Rosacea, use a fragrance-free detergent made for sensitive skin (right now I'm using All's Free and Clear) & NO fabric softener.

Standard detergents and fabric softeners often use added scents and other chemicals that can be irritating to sensitive skin. Detergent is washed out, but fabric softeners stay on.

For facial skin, it's best to avoid fabric softeners on anything you will be putting against your face, even if it says fragrance free.

Don't over-do it on the detergent! I know I have been guilty of this. More often than not, too much laundry soap is added to a load and not all washed out during a rinse cycle. Sensitive skin, in particular, can get irritated by remnants of detergent left behind.

When in doubt, run another quick rinse cycle to make sure everything is rinsed properly, and take it easy on the laundry detergent!

Do you have any Rosacea Skin Care Tips you follow that help you? I know, because I have it, and I did it.

I have been using my tried and true skin care products for my Rosacea going on many years now and don't stray from it. However, when I started following a skin care esthetician on Instagram named Devyn @PureSkinOC, and listened to her podcast, I kept hearing her say how much she loved Grapeseed oil and how much her sensitive skin and Rosacea clients loved it too.

The benefits alone made me very curious...and how could my skin not like something so soothing, moisturizing and natural? The truth was, it took a little getting used to. It felt like I had oil on my face. Imagine that. ha! And I had to keep touching my face to see if the oil had finally sunk in yet. Did I put too much on? Is it supposed to feel like this? Will this ever sink in?

Then my eyes started to sting a little bit. Did I get the oil too close to my eyes?

As is the case with Rosacea, some may also have ocular Rosacea (I have it mildly, as in dry eyes). My ophthalmologist said when my eyes sting I should put some eye drops in, so I did. A word to the wise, it would have been better to put in eye drops before the oil, in case the drops can pull any stray oil in your eyes that may have touched your eye lashes.

Once I laid down in bed, worried that the oil on my face was going to ruin my silk pillow case, I felt slight itchiness on my skin. Here's me all night, "Am I just making this up or is my face actually itching?"

My internal dialogue is exhausting sometimes. I'm so high maintenance when it comes to my skin.

And BTW, I did put some grapeseed oil on my arms and hands before bed but they didn't itch.

Morning After

My face, arms and hands felt soft and there were no visible signs of irritation.

My silk pillow case looked like I hadn't slept with oil on my face (ha!)...and since it was wash day, I tossed it in the wash and it came out looking perfectly normal. No greasy aftermath.

I posted my night 1 experience on my Instagram feed and Devyn kindly let me know that the itchiness may have happened because my skin may have been very dry. She went on to say that her clients love it and it's really helped those with sensitive skin and Rosacea. I wanted to give my skin a grace period to get used to it, so I felt encouraged to try it again the next night.

Night 2

The whole "putting oil on my face" experience wasn't so foreign this time and I did use less and made sure to put eye drops in BEFORE applying the grapeseed oil. I'm not so hard to train.

I didn't notice much stinging of my eyes and had a little itch, but not too bad.

Morning After

Although my arms and hands still tolerated it well, I woke up with an itchy welt on my cheek and another itchy spot on my forehead. Bummer. My face was not liking this grapeseed oil. I hadn't had that kind of skin response in a long time, so my enthusiasm to extend my skin grace period was growing smaller.

One more time

At this point I gave my skin a break from the grapeseed oil and went back to my favorite Vanicream lotion to moisturize and in no time, my skin went back to normal.

So what did I do? About a week later, because I wanted my skin to like it SO bad, I tried the grapeseed oil again...and my skin broke out. Boo. It's time to face the fact that this is probably not going to work for me.

I reached out to Devyn and asked her if she had clients who haven't reacted well to grapeseed oil? She kindly responded by asking about the other products I was using (both night and morning) so she could determine what might be going on.

Her clients with Rosacea have had their skin improve with her products and the grapeseed oil, but decided it might be the oil reacting to the Metronidazole topical gel I put on my face at night. It made sense. So I tried the grapeseed oil one night and didn't apply my Metronidazole gel...but my face still didn't like it.

Am I still using Grapeseed oil?

No, but I haven't ruled out using it on my arms and hands at night. Because I know it is a great hydrator, is beneficial to my skin, and can leave it feeling softer, I haven't put it away forever.

Am I disappointed I can't use grapeseed oil on my face? Yes! Will I still try it again? Probably. ha! Maybe in the winter when the air gets colder and drier my skin will drink it up without breaking out? We'll see. I'll let you know if my skin decides to like it!

And here's the thing, everyone's skin is different. Devyn has clients with Rosacea who love using grapeseed oil. Even if we share Rosacea, you can have a different experience with products than I do. There are definitely benefits for your skin, so if your face tolerates it well, it's a win! If not, you can always use it on your body for the healthy and soft skin benefits.

Have you already tried Grapeseed Oil on your Rosacea or sensitive skin? "With all the stress I'm under right now from the fears and anxiety surrounding the Coronavirus, how will my skin be able to handle the stress? The last thing I need is for my Rosacea to start flaring. Are stress and Rosacea related? And if so, what can I do about it?"

Do these questions sound familiar to you? Maybe you've been thinking about this yourself as the stress mounts, the home-stay weeks feel more like months, and we have more questions than answers.

You're not alone in your quest to find peace amidst all the worry and anxiety. And for those of us with skin conditions, like Rosacea, we can't help but wonder how long it will be before the stress starts to show up on our skin?

Luckily, I am prepared and have all my favorite Rosacea-friendly skin care products stocked up at home, but is that enough to keep my Rosacea at bay? Will my skin start to show the stress, currently plaguing my mind?

Never fear, let's look at what one very reputable source (one of my favorites) says about stress and Rosacea flares: The National Rosacea Society.

Can Stress cause Rosacea flares?

From all the information I devoured on their website, the answer to whether stress and Rosacea flares are related, is an undeniable YES.

Emotional stress has been identified as a common trigger among people with Rosacea. One study cited almost 80% of respondents identified emotional stress as a Rosacea trigger for them.

I know I could raise my hand right along with them. Emotional stress, particularly when I get flushed from feeling all the feelings, totally gets my Rosacea flaring.

They went on to say that the tricky thing about Rosacea, is that if you are flaring because of emotional distress, the Rosacea flares only make the emotional distress worse. And no one wants that.

So, what can we do to prevent the stress in our lives from triggering a Rosacea flare, creating a cycle of chaos on our face?

Dr. Grossbart, as cited in an article from the National Rosacea Society, suggests implementing stress management techniques of mind and body to reduce emotional stress, thereby reducing the chances of having stress-related Rosacea flares.
How to Reduce Stress on your Rosacea Prone Skin

In addition to reducing overall stress to your mind and body, it's also very important to maintain or enhance your normal Rosacea skin care routine so there aren't additional stressors to your skin.

Getting an extra prescription on hand if you are running low *I actually did this myself. I use Metronidazole gel and asked my dermatologist for one refill during this period of home-stay and she graciously called it in for me.

I love to sleep on *my favorite silk pillow cases that are super soothing to my skin and hair. Gift giving can be tricky when it comes to someone with sensitive skin. As someone with Rosacea, I've been given my fair share of lovely gift bags full of smelly lotions, beauty masks and make-up products that would surely set my skin aflame.

I've been through plenty of awkward moments trying to make sure my face doesn't match my inner turmoil. Smiling on the outside while thinking to myself, "Ugh, I'll never be able to use this...," hoping I don't seem ungrateful. And nobody wants that.

Gifts you SHOULDN'T give someone with Rosacea or Sensitive Skin

1) Stay away from the smelly lotions and body wash store

2) Don't bother with new beauty trends like peel off face masks or fancy make-up

3) Think twice before getting her perfume

4) Certainly don't go spending a lot of money on girl's-night-out facials because it would probably melt her face off.

I know, we're complicated.

I cringe when I hear of people who reach for the same towel to dry their face, that they use to dry off their body all week. Call me fanatical, but I'm not a fan of bacteria on my face after it has just been washed clean, are you?

Certainly a moist towel that gets used over and over again throughout the week on all your body parts (and heaven forbid dropped on the floor in a lump) is NOT what you want to dry off your clean face with unless you like break-outs (said no one, ever). The number one way to transfer bacteria back to your clean skin is through a dirty (used) towel.

If you're struggling with Rosacea flares or acne break-outs, you might want to review not just your face washing routine, but also how you're drying your face. Clearer skin might just be one clean drying cloth away.
1. Before showering, hang a clean, small face drying cloth next to your body towel. It can be a regular terrycloth washcloth that came with the towel set or you can opt for a soft face cloth if you have extra sensitive skin.

2. After getting out of the shower, use one side of the clean drying cloth, to gently blot your face dry (never drag or pull on your facial skin or it can cause irritation, damage and even premature aging).

3. Flip that used cloth to the other side (which is still clean) and hang it to use for your next shower.

4. Dry off the rest of your body with your body towel and hang it back up to dry. *NEVER use your body towel against your face to dry it off unless it has been freshly washed.

5. Once you've used both sides of your drying cloth, either hang it to use as a body washcloth (not a face cloth) in the shower the next morning or put it in the laundry.

...And the rotation continues.

Does using a face drying cloth really help prevent Rosacea flares and Acne break-outs?

Yes!

A big part of any Rosacea skin care routine and preventing acne break-outs, is making sure you are keeping your skin free from bacteria. Using a clean, soft washcloth to cleanse, and blotting your face dry with a clean cloth is equally as important as choosing the right cleanser and moisturizer for your face. So the next time you reach for your body towel to wash your face? Think again!
Clean cloths = clean skin.
If I told you there was an easy solution to reducing your Rosacea flares just by what you ate every day, would you believe me? Is there really such a thing as a Rosacea Diet?

This topic is a personal one for me, since I have had Rosacea for just over 10 years. Can what we eat every day really help reduce our flares and ease and calm Rosacea? I decided to find out.

DOES WHAT WE EAT EFFECT OUR SKIN AND ROSACEA?

We know diet does indeed have an effect on our skin. Not drinking enough water = dehydrated skin; eating foods that trigger our skin to react = acne, hives, redness, rosacea flares. Food and skin are not independent of one another.

THE DIET - ROSACEA CONNECTION

Rosacea Trigger foods

Foods that cause a reaction or aggravation of Rosacea on the skin, causing it to flare-up, including flushing, itching, redness and acne like bumps called Pistules, are often called trigger foods. (see Rosacea.org for a lists of common food triggers)

What I know personally, is that my Rosacea gets worse when I eat sugar. Without fail, every time I drink a can of soda, or eat sugary treats, I can count on having a Rosacea flare either within a few hours or at least by the next morning. Sometimes I still eat or drink it on purpose and gauge whether it's "worth the risk" while other times I won't touch it. I have a big sweet tooth so avoiding sugar is really hard for me and I'm not always successful, but I do know sugar is one of the things that will bring my Rosacea out of hybernation, even if it has been calm for a while.

Inflammation

Your body's way of protecting and defending itself against injury, illness or infection, is called inflammation. It can be situational or chronic and while you can't always see inflammation going on inside your body, it can show up on your skin as redness, swelling, heat and irritation.

Eating too much sugar is linked to inflammation in the body.
Rosacea is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition affecting the face.

According to Rachel Devine, a holistic aesthetician, & creator of a certified organic skin care line, "Every single skin condition is caused internally."
Source: Room to Grow Podcast Episode #15 by Emily Gough

Read that again. It's so powerful and makes so much sense.

She went on to say, "Just because (our skin) is an external organ, a lot of people forget that it's an organ and when there's inflammation on the skin (Rosacea, acne or anything like that) it's really important to think of it at that point as being an organ...because if our liver's inflamed, we're going to do something about it. But a lot of people think, "oh my skin's inflamed I've just got to put some chemicals on there and hopefully it will all go away", but it doesn't work like that."

CHANGING OUR DIET CAN HELP REDUCE ROSACEA FLARES

My Rosacea Diet Test

In a survey by the National Rosacea Society, 73% of Rosacea participants reduced occurrences of rosacea flare-ups by changing their diets (N=516).

So a couple months ago I decided to put this idea to the test: would changing my diet really improve my skin? To be totally honest, my "new diet" really came from the fact that I was tired of squeezing myself into my tight pants, but clearer skin might be a bonus? Right?

What I did every day:

Ate tons of veggies like a crazy person. And I do mean crazy. Like brussels sprouts and broccoli for breakfast kind of crazy. And an overabundance of veggies at every meal - sometimes they were even the main course (gasp!)

Eliminated high inflammation foods like bread, crackers, gluten, processed sugars, ice cream, soda pop, most dairy

Ate a variety of fruits and added them to smoothies along with spinach, carrots, kale, & almond milk

Ate lots of salmon

Ate less lean meats

Ate nuts for snacks

Exercised at least 30 minutes a day (walked on a treadmill & biked outside)

Drank a lot more water

RESULTS

What happened?
My skin looked really good.
And I'm not just saying that.
For real, I would look in the mirror and think, wow, I can really see a difference.

I think my skin had been dehydrated but also malnourished. While I did all the right things on the outside of my skin everyday, I hadn't been doing all the right things on the inside. And it really did make a difference.

THE ROSACEA DIET: HEALING FROM THE INSIDE-OUT

While there's no clear-cut "Rosacea Diet" with exact recipes and food plans to follow (because our bodies are all different), it's all about adapting our every day diet by adding and subtracting so we get less of the wrong things and more of the right ones.

Part of this equation is figuring out what your body likes and doesn't like. The National Rosacea Society suggests keeping a food diary to more easily track how your skin reacts to certain foods. For me, I know that eating mainly vegetables and fruits, fish and lean meats, while eliminating processed sugars, and certain carbs, and drinking more water helped my skin look clearer. For someone else, maybe a food allergy test would help to specifically identify foods that cause an inflammatory reaction in their body.

Here are some tips to start your own version of a Rosacea diet to help keep your skin clear and healthy

Step 1: SUBTRACT

1) Stop eating foods you know are bad for you and your skin (ie processed sugars and other foods that increase inflammation in the body).
2) Keep a food journal to track what you eat every day, how you feel and how your skin reacts to it.
3) Identify any new dietary triggers and inflammatory foods and eliminate them from your diet.

Step 2: ADD

1) Make eating clean, anti-inflammtory foods your goal
2) Turn yourself into a nutritional powerhouse by loading up your cells with vegetables, fruits, healthy fats (olives, avocados), salmon and foods with Omega 3s.
3) Create a notebook or Pinterest board and add your favorite healthy recipes to keep you motivated and inspired (check out Arthritis.org for lists of anti-inflammatory foods and recipes)

Be patient with yourself! This process does take discipline and time, but it will be worth it in the long run (and even short-term!) The benefits don't just stay with your skin, you may also lose some unwanted weight and be healthier.

Do you have Rosacea and still wear make-up?

It can be tricky for some with Rosacea to find make-up that doesn't irritate their skin plus also provide adequate coverage for the redness.

Ocular Rosacea can also make wearing eye make-up difficult as it can irritate the eyes, and with excess tearing, wash the eye liner or mascara back into the eye. Sting!

I feel pretty lucky that my Rosacea-prone skin and eyes tolerate most make-up. I try to keep my make-up routine (and skin care routine) very simple, and although I wonder if there's something even better out there for me, I'm happy with my current Rosacea "friendly" products.

*I have included product links for your convenience. Full disclosure below.

My Simple Rosacea Make-up Routine

Foundation:

I've been using Mary Kay Medium Coverage Foundation for almost 15 years. It covers my redness pretty well and doesn't irritate my skin. I still can get itchy sometimes but I'm not sure if it's directly associated with the foundation or my skin just being my skin. I recommend finding a Mary Kay consultant in your area and not buying it through a marketplace like Amazon. I made that mistake once and could tell the product I received was not at the quality standard it should have been.

Foundation applicators:

I use these Up & Up brand Latex Free Foam Cosmetic Wedges from Target. My skin does well with these. I just blot the foundation on with the sponges, no dragging. I have tried other makeup sponges but they seem to "drink" the foundation and don't blot as well on my face, so I still with these.

Eye liner:

Maybelline New York Unstoppable Mechanical Liner has been my go-to for a while and it doesn't irritate my eyes. I like to buy the double-pack at Walmart but you can find them on Amazon as well. They last me a long time.

Mascara:

My daily for lashes at the moment is Loreal's Voluminous mascara with the straight brush head. I like it because it goes on pretty smoothly and washes off easily. The hard thing about wearing mascara in general is when tears form and they wash mascara back into my eye. Don't get me started on the sting. Combine that with cutting an onion and you're one hot mess! BTW I never use waterproof mascara as it is really hard to get off my lashes.

As you can see, my Rosacea friendly make-up routine really is quite simple. I don't bother with blush (hello, already have it naturally) and keep my eyes simple without a bunch of eye shadow. So the next question is, how do I get all that make-up off without irritating my Rosacea-prone skin?

My Simple Rosacea Skin Care Routine

The key to Rosacea skin care is to keep it GENTLE.

Gentle cleansers, gentle face cloths, gentle motion, gentle blotting, gentle moisturizers, you get the picture.

My favorite gentle cleanser:

Vanicream gentle facial cleanser is by far my favorite face wash. I prefer the liquid face wash over the bar. It has been gentle for my Rosacea and doesn't irritate my skin. I love it because it's free from common irritants, and my face feels clean but not tight when I'm done washing.

My favorite gentle washcloths for washing my face and make-up removal:

I apply the Vanicream gentle face wash with a soft washcloth. The best and only cloths you should be using for washing your face if you have Rosacea, are Fairface Washcloths.

They are soft and gentle so they don't cause redness or irritation to your skin. The smooth, thick double-layers of soft flannel will help keep your skin calm as you wash it.

They really are the best washcloths for sensitive skin and, naturally, they are all I use.

If you're the type who hates to dirty up a perfectly lovely white washcloth, you may want to opt for the new line of soft black washcloths- Fairface Darks: Double layers of thick, soft black flannel with the same gentle qualities of the white cloths, but without the worries of make-up stains left behind.

Gentle eye make-up remover:

In addition to washing my face with Vanicream gentle cleanser, I use Neutrogena Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover to get the last remnants of mascara and eye liner off. It's gentle and it doesn't irritate my eyes.

Gentle moisturizer:

Back to Vanicream people! I love the Vanicream Lite Lotion and slather it all over my face, use it on my neck, chest and even on my arms. I also use the Vanicream Skin Cream in the winter when I need a little heavier coverage. *Because I use a topical medication for Rosacea (which I apply after washing my face) I apply my moisturizer after the topical medication.

Itch relief moisturizer:

Sarna Sensitive lotion is a medicated moisturizer that relieves the itch of eczema and sensitive dry skin. It is heaven-sent on days where my skin feels a little more dry or sensitive. It's cooling, and soothing to the skin and since it's fragrance and steroid-free you can use it every day.

For daytime SPF:

I just wanted to throw this in because, although SPF is not needed at night, this is a vital part of my skin care routine every day. In addition to the products above, in the day time I use Eucerin Daily Face Lotion - Broad Spectrum SPF 30. I love this and have been using it for years. It's light weight and still protects well. I use it under my make-up and it goes on smoothly. I highly recommend it.
Did anyone else wake up at 4am, Sept 23rd, to ring in the fall equinox? No? Just me?

When I read the night before that the official fall equinox was beginning at 3:50am in the morning, I think it seeped too far into my brain, thus triggering a 4am wake-up call to nothing but the official arrival of fall whilst laying awake in complete darkness.

While this change of season means less daylight per day (thru December 21, 2019, the official time of winter solstice), what does it mean for your skin? Do you need to do anything differently for your Rosacea-prone skin in the fall?

I wanted to share these 5 Rosacea skin care rules I personally live by as the seasons change, to help my skin adapt to the weather and conditions without skipping a beat.

1. Stay hydrated

Drinking more water hydrates and plumps your skin cells, flushes out toxins and improves circulation and blood flow. It is listed on Rosacea.org as a top tip for healthy skin, since dehydrated skin is more prone to flare-ups, irritation and sensitivity.

2. Keep your skin moisturized

A common problem associated with Rosacea is the facial skin barrier dysfunction which makes facial skin unable to retain water. Moisturizers are an important part of a Rosacea skin care routine to lock in as much moisture as possible, so make sure to apply moisturizer every day while your skin is still moist. If you use a topical medication for your Rosacea, like I do, my dermatologist told me medication first, moisturizer second.

3. Keep wearing sunscreen

You know how I feel about sunscreen. Sunscreen 365. I wear it every day without fail, rain or shine and in Seattle, where I live, it's often cloudy and even rainy. Do I still wear sunscreen in the fall? Heck yes! It is a physical layer of protection from the elements and UVB & UVA rays that are still there, even in cloud cover or rain. Wear it religiously. It's most often the number 1 skin care recommendation that skin care professionals make. If you do nothing else, wear sunscreen (but ps, please also wash your face).

4. Dress in layers

One of my big pet peeves as the weather starts to get cooler, is places that crank up their heaters like it's below zero outside. Since flushing often leads to Rosacea flares, it's really important to maintain a comfortable body temperature. Since you can't control someone's thermostat, dressing in layers will allow you to still wear the stylish outfit, but take a layer off if needed, so if rooms starts to heat up, you can layer down before you face gets flushed. I personally like to wear a cute graphic tee and a colorful cardigan. Peeling off the outer layer can give you instant relief.

5. Choose a cooler version of your favorite cold weather drinks

One of my favorite things to do with my mom in the fall and winter, is grab a Starbucks hot chocolate, with a shot of caramel. Mmmmm. Just writing this makes my mouth water. The downside to drinking something hot like hot chocolate or coffee is the heat that it brings to our face and body. If you were lost in a snowstorm and someone handed you a thermos of hot chocolate, you'd be all in, but if you have Rosacea, you need to watch your heat intake.

One trick I've found that works well for me at Starbucks is to ask them to make my drink lower temperature, or even "kid temperature". Not only does this make it more comfortable to sip down, it helps eliminate flushing brought on from drinking something hot.
Do your eyes sting or feel irritated?

I used to chalk up my eye irritation to dry air in the winter, too much a/c in the car during the summer, spring allergies, bad mascara, or simply being tired. But when I looked more into it, it all pointed to the same thing: Ocular Rosacea. It's an associated part of facial Rosacea many people don't even know about, or realize they have.

More Than Just Seasonal Eye Irritation

The first clue that my eye irritation was more than just seasonal or environmental troubles, came at my last ophthalmology visit for a routine eye exam. Per usual, the assistant had me lean back in the chair as she dropped 2 quick eye numbing drops in each eye. They stung so badly I could hardly stand it. She was surprised. They weren't supposed to sting like that. She said I must have really dry eyes. Hmmm. Dry eyes? I hadn't really considered it, but maybe that's why my contact lenses felt so irritating and stuck to my eyes like an angry suction cup.

Symptoms of Ocular Rosacea

It turns out, around 60% of people surveyed with Rosacea, also have Ocular Rosacea.
Symptoms of Ocular Rosacea may include:
• Redness
• Feeling like there's something in your eye (gritty sensation)
• Stinging
• Watery
• Recurrent sty's, cysts or swelling of the eyelid

For people like me, who wear contacts, it can be extra irritating because the natural moisture that keeps the contacts "floating" on your eyes is diminished. It is as uncomfortable as it sounds, but it doesn't mean you still can't wear contacts.

Easing eye Irritation Associated with Rosacea

I discussed my dry eyes and discomfort with my ophthalmologist who told me that plugged meibomian glands are most likely to blame. Have you ever noticed little bumps that sometimes form around the base of your eye lid? Maybe you're prone to sty's or eye swelling? Maybe your eyes are a little goopy in the morning? These meibomian glands are what secretes a fatty substance that keeps our eyes moist, so when they are plugged, it results in dry eyes and can lead to further irritation.

1. Remove eye make-up every night

Recommended products:
My celebrity make-up artist friend, who also has Rosacea, recommends using eye wash pads to keep her eyes happy;
OR I use a gentle eye-make-up remover Neutrogena Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover, which is usually around $6 + Fairface Darks (the best soft, black washcloths - no stains!)

2. Wash your eyes gently with baby shampoo

Recommended products:
I like this 3 pack travel size Johnson and Johnson Baby Shampoo so you can easily take it with you

3. Use a soft, warm compress on your eyes. This helps to steam/unplug the plugged ducts.

Recommended products:
Fairface Delicate Washcloths are a perfect, soft compress. Just dip in warm to hot water (but not too hot), ring it out and lay it across your eyes to melt away the oils plugging your ducts. Repeat re-warming the cloth for up to 10 minutes.

4. Use lubricating eye drops (especially important for contact lens wearers)

Recommended products:
For every day dryness prevention my Ophthalmologist recommended: Systane Eye Drops (*according to directions, if wearing contact lenses, remove them before using these drops and wait at least 10 minutes before re-inserting them; and repeat throughout the day)

For contact lens wearers: Refresh Plus Lubricant Eye Drops before you put in your contacts AND Blink for contacts (I LOVE these. I put a drop in my eyes first and then on the contact when I put it in. It helps to repeat this during the day before my eyes get too dry)

5. Clean soft contact lenses with hydrogen peroxide systems to remove contact lens debris and wear eye glasses when possible to give your eyes a rest from contacts.

Recommended products:
I use Clear Care Plus HydraGlyde Cleaning and Disinfecting Solution
NEVER put the cleaner directly in your eye. Just use it with the cleaning system. It works wonders on removing protein build-up and makes contact lens wearing, even with Rosacea, that much better.
We all know that the best recommendations for Rosacea skin care products (beyond aestheticians & dermatologists) come from those of us who actually have Rosacea and use the products ourselves.

A recent interview with celebrity make-up artist Christina Grant, who also happens to have Rosacea herself, revealed some of her favorite Rosacea-friendly skin care and make-up products. Since her life revolves around not only glamming up stars on broadway, tv, and movie sets with make-up and healthy skin care methods, she also has to be vigilant about keeping up her own skin's health and appearance.
*Please note, we have included helpful links to recommended products and as an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.

Rosacea Triggers

Christina shared that, common to many, her Rosacea affects both her skin and eyes. Some of her triggers are food related (i.e. too much gluten and wine) and working outdoors in weather conditions of all types. Wind, in particular, plays havoc with her skin and eyes.

Favorite Rosacea Skin care Products for Protection and Gentle Cleansing

Her recommendation for protecting her skin while working outdoors, is applying a thermal skin protectant, before heading out, to shield her skin from the elements. To calm her skin after being out in harsh conditions, she likes products from the Dermalogica Ultra Calming line. Her favorite essentials are the Dermalogica UltraCalming cleanser and Dermalogica Barrier Repair.

She also loves Fairface Washcloths for gentle sensitive skin cleansing and make-up removal. Pro-tip: After wetting our soft washcloths, she warms them up in a towel warmer or microwave to help soothe actors' tired faces and "it melts the make-up off like a dream".

Favorite Sunscreen for Rosacea & Sensitive Skin

For herself, Christina chooses Dermalogica Super Sensitive Shield SPF 30 to protect her Rosacea prone-skin. She also mentioned, that while working on the popular TBS show, Search Party, the lead actress liked Suntegrity Tinted sunscreen which provided a bit of color and light coverage (it also contains the rosacea-friendly ingredient Zinc-oxide, known for it's anti-inflammatory properties).

Rosacea Eye Care tips and Make-up Favorites

Ocular rosacea can be really irritating to the eyes, causing redness, burning and itchiness. To keep her eyes happy, Christina recommends using lubricating drops (these are my favorite) and eye wipes called Eye Scrub.

While this natural beauty admits she only wears make-up when she has to (how ironic, coming from a professional make-up artist) her favorite go-to make-up products are Dr. Hauschka’s Translucent Bronze Concentrate (mixed into a moisturizer) or Koh Gen Doh Aqua foundation when she wants a little fuller coverage.

For sensitive eyes like hers, she recommends Weekend Lash Stain, by Milk makeup. I looked for that specific product but could only find Milk's Ubame Mascara, which is listed as "74% natural formula incorporates innovative ingredients like ubame oak charcoal". Christina also recommended Lavera's mascara which her eyes can tolerate well for long periods of time.

Final pro-tips for Rosacea skin care

Just as Cleansing Gently is our Fairface motto, Christina agrees that gentle daily cleansing is important and warns to be careful not to strip your skin with harsh cleansers, scrubs and masks. A microfolient product she does recommend is Dermalogica's Daily Microfolient.

And of course, in addition to moisturizing and staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water, is her MAKE-UP ARTIST MUST: clean you brushes after applying make-up - every time!
